🔧 RV Care: The Dreaded Poo Pyramid

Updated: Jul 9, 2023

A poo pyramid, or poo-dam, is a solid mass of waste that can form in the black tank of an RV. The dreaded poo pyramid can build up and block the drain, causing a clog. It can also cause unpleasant odors. Here are a few ways to avoid a poo pyramid!

  • Dump the tank regularly. The EPA recommends dumping the tank every three to five days.

  • Use plenty of water when using the toilet. This will help to keep the waste from clumping together.

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals in the toilet. These chemicals can damage the tank and make it more difficult to clean.

  • Have a good ventilation system. This will help to prevent odors and keep the tank from getting too warm.

If you do get a poo pyramid, there are a few things you can do to dissolve it.

  • Pour a gallon of water into the tank and flush the toilet several times.

  • Add a tank treatment product. Here is a product that has worked for us. It's available at Amazon. Unique Clear-It RV Black Tank Unclogger Liquid (32 oz.)

  • Rinse the black tank with the on-board black tank flush.

  • Use a Camco Swivel Stick tank cleaner. Stick it down into the tank, turn on the water and move it around to rinse your black tank for about 30 minutes.

If you are unable to dissolve the poo pyramid, you may need to have the tank professionally cleaned.

Here are some additional tips to help keep your RV black tank clean and healthy.

  • Always use the toilet paper that is designed for RVs. This paper will dissolve more easily and will not clog the pipes.

  • If you are using a portable toilet, be sure to empty it regularly.

  • Clean the toilet bowl and tank regularly with a mild soap and water solution.

  • If you see any signs of mold or mildew, treat it immediately with a mold and mildew cleaner.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your RV black tank clean and healthy, and avoid the dreaded poo dam.
