We were recently in a campground and noticed our neighbors had zip-lock bags with water and pennies in them, hanging from their awning. When we inquired why, they said it keeps the flies away. So, after pondering the concept and doing some research, we have come to the following wabbly conclusion.
According to the internet, which we all know is the absolute authority on all things, there is simply no scientific evidence to prove that a baggie of water with pennies in it will actually control flies. However, there are a few theories about why it might work.
The refraction of light. Flies have compound eyes, which are made up of thousands of individual lenses. When light hits the water, it is refracted, or bent, in different ways. This can create a confusing and disorienting effect for the flies.
The shiny penny. Flies are attracted to shiny objects, and they may mistake the penny for another fly or a predator. When they get close to the bag, they see their own reflection and become scared.
The humidity. Flies are attracted to moisture, but they also need air to breathe. The water in the bag may make it difficult for the flies to breathe, causing them to fly away.
We've also come to the realization that it is also possible that the baggie of water with pennies in it merely has a placebo effect. This means that people believe that it works, so it actually does work for them.
There are other, more effective ways to keep flies away, such as using fly traps or insect spray. Here are some additional tips for keeping flies away.
Keep your RV clean and free of food scraps.
Seal up any cracks or holes in your camper that flies could use to get in.
Use fly screens on your windows and doors.
Keep some potted herbs that repel flies, such as lavender, mint, and basil.
Set up fly traps.
Use a fly swatter or insect spray to kill flies. We like Zevo!
After our exhaustive research, we are absolutely confident that the baggie of water and pennies strategy to control flies, may, or may not, work. On this fact, we are 100% confident! Seriously...just roll up a newspaper, folks!
