🌤️ Joys of RVing: Conch Shells and Sunsets

We are very much looking forward to celebrating New Year's Eve in Key West, Florida this year! Forget the shivering crowds and plummeting temperatures of a traditional New Year's Eve. This year, we've swapped our mittens for flip-flops and traded the tradition ball drop for a conch shell descent in the sun-kissed paradise of the Conch Republic.

Key West, the "Southernmost City in the Continental U.S.", transforms into a vibrant kaleidoscope of celebration on December 31st. From quirky "thing" drops and electrifying street parties to romantic sunset sails and decadent waterfront dinners, this is a way to ring in the new year that perfectly captures our unique spirit. Here's a few of the things we look forward to doing!

The Conch Shell Drop at Sloppy Joe's

The iconic Sloppy Joe's bar lowers a giant illuminated conch shell as the clock strikes midnight. This Key West tradition, complete with live music and a raucous countdown, is a must-do for these party animals.

The Lowering of the Pirate Wench

We might channel our inner buccaneers at the Schooner Wharf Bar, where a pirate wench descends from the mast of a tall ship just as the new year arrives. Cannons will boom, music will soar, and the island's seafaring spirit will come alive under a canopy of fireworks.

The Red High Heel Drop Starring Sushi

I doubt we'll make this one, but some folks will get a dose of Key West's flamboyant drag scene at the Bourbon Street Pub. The legendary Sushi, a local drag queen extraordinaire, gracefully descends in a pair of sparkling red stilettos as the crowd in attendance does whatever they do.

There are many other festive activities beyond things "dropping". We most likely will indulge ourselves with some of these.

  • Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

  • Live Music on Duval Street

  • Sunset Sail and Champagne Toast

  • Gourmet New Year's Eve Dinners

We've done our homework, and here are a few tips for a Memorable New Year's Eve in Key West.

  • Book your accommodations early

  • Consider transportation

  • Embrace the festive spirit

  • Relax and enjoy the moment

Yes, we are ditching the ordinary and embracing the extraordinary this New Year's Eve. Key West's infectious energy, quirky traditions, and sun-kissed charm will make our celebration unforgettable.

We hope this blog post has inspired you to consider Key West for your next New Year's Eve adventure. If you have any questions or want to share your own Key West New Year's Eve experiences, feel free to leave a comment below!
