Octogenarian RVs

The oldest known RV is a 1914 Ford Model T Motor Caravan. It was commissioned by the Bentall family, the founders of a department-store chain in the United Kingdom. The caravan was built by Baico, a British coachbuilder. It is 20 feet long and 7 feet wide, and it has a wood-burning stove, a leather sofa, and enough space for four people to sleep. The caravan was sold at auction in 2022 for £27,500.


Here are some other notable early RVs.

  • 1910 Pierce-Arrow Touring Landau: This was the first RV to be mass-produced. It was built on a Pierce-Arrow chassis and had a body that was designed by the renowned automotive designer, Harley Earl.


  • 1915 Roland Conklin Motorhome: This was the first RV to have a bathroom. It was built on a Cadillac chassis and had a body that was designed by Conklin himself.


  • 1920s Airstream trailers: Airstream trailers were first produced in the 1920s. They are known for their distinctive aluminum bodies and their high quality.
