🔎 RV Review: New Grand Ole Opry House

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

The Grand Ole Opry is a long-running radio show and concert hall in Nashville, Tennessee. WSM AM is the flagship station for the longest-running radio broadcast in US history. It is credited with helping to shape the sound of country, which is why they call this town...Music City USA. We love our country music and point our RV toward Nashville as often as we can. On our last two visits we stayed at Two Rivers RV Park...a very nice Good Sam Resort just a couple of miles from Opry Mills, the New Grand Ole Opry House and the General Jackson Showboat.

The Opry began broadcasting in 1925 from the Ryman Auditorium, a former church. The Ryman was a popular venue for the Opry, but it was also becoming too small to accommodate the growing audience. In the late 1960s, National Life & Accident Insurance Company, which owned the Ryman, decided to build a new venue specifically for the Opry.

The New Grand Ole Opry House opened on March 16, 1974. It was located in Opryland USA, a theme park that was also owned by National Life & Accident. The Opry House had a capacity of 4,400 seats, which was much larger than the Ryman. It also had a number of modern amenities, such as air conditioning and a sound system.

The Opry House quickly became a popular venue for country music performers. It has hosted many of the biggest names in the genre, including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Garth Brooks. The Opry House has also been the site of many historic moments in country music history, such as the first live television broadcast of the show in 1978.

In 2010, the Grand Ole Opry House was damaged by a flood. The show was temporarily relocated to the Ryman Auditorium while repairs were made. The Opry House reopened in September 2010, and it has continued to be a popular venue for country music performers ever since.

Here are some of the key events in the history of the New Grand Ole Opry House.

  • 1974: The Grand Ole Opry House opens on March 16.

  • 1978: The Opry House is televised live for the first time.

  • 1985: The Opry House becomes a regular venue for television broadcasts.

  • 2010: The Opry House is damaged by a flood.

  • 2010: The Opry House reopens in September.

The Grand Ole Opry House is a beloved landmark in Nashville, and it is a testament to the rich history of country music. It is a place where country music legends have been created, and it continues to be a place where new stars are born.

We recently caught Lukas Nelson, Bill Anderson, Oak Ridge Boys, Lainey Wilson, Josh Turner, Carrie Underwood and Jackson Browne at the Grand Ole Opry. Always a great show!
